New Projects1 • OROM CAMP PRIMARY SCHOOL:
Located about 100kms north-east of Kitgum close to the Sudan border, Orom is a small township of grass huts nestled in the foothills of Kidepo Mountain range. For the last twenty years the people of Orom ran away from the killing fields of war and hid in the mountains. Now a whole new generation is coming out, returning to traditional land. A community of 8,000 hardworking and resilient people are setting up camp in a golden pastureland. The entire area has no existing development or infrastructure. CKS is planning to assist the Orom community with the building of new Primary School in their region. The new school will provide all the children in the area education, medical assistance, clothing and meals. To address immediate needs, while the school is being built, CKS will undertake a project to identify water bores and establish water pumps to provide fresh clean water for drinking, bathing and washing. The total cost
of the project will total close to US$200,000 and will require a team
of builders from CKS almost 15 months to complete in an environment
over 100 kms from their homes with no electricity, no medicine, no
telephone access, no markets or shops. We need your support with assisting
in funding this mighty project. Attached below is a Bill of Quantity
for building the new Orom Primary School, showing a complete breakdown
of required funds. You are invited to review the attached budget and see where you might be able to help. You may be able to provide the funds for the roofing of 16 classrooms, supply of furniture for 16 classrooms and offices or the construction of the chain link fence? Building supervisor, Peterson Rascara, grinned at the prospect of the job, despite its known challenges, "You know we work for CHILDCARE. They have already shown the land for the school. It's flat and good. Grandmum (Irene), if you say yes, we will do it." CKS Gloryland Junction will be increasing its facilities to include a new expanded children's ward. There are now 15 children living there. Some attend our school by day. Rather than a sad place, children are kept happy with toys, loving staff, good food and medicine in a happy atmosphere of music and cartoons on the walls. Emmanuel is one of these children living at the hospice who is an example of the transformation CKS Gloryland Junction provides. At 4 years old he arrived swollen with malnutrition, AIDS positive and broken hearted following the death of both parents. It took 2 months to coax a smile from his serious face. Now he happily pushes trucks around the floor and ejoys jigging to the music. Apart from regular meals, infants are provided daily milk formula while adults are given anti-retroviral (ARV) and other required medication. The cost of the milk formula and medication is hundreds of dollars per month per patient.
